Highland (also known as “the Highlands”) is a city-center neighborhood in Denver. Its located directly northwest of the original city plot, currently LoDo. Directly west of Highland is West Highland, the two neighborhoods together make up The Highlands. Currently the Highlands has a population of 9300 people and with recent developments of LoDo and the construction of the Millennium Bridge, it has become some of the most sought after property in Denver.
The Highlands were developed after a massive flood in 1864 wiped out parts of Denver. The Denver citizens moved up the hill for protection from future flooding of the Platte River. After construction of the Fifteenth Street Bridge, Highland was much more accessible and became a city in 1885 and became annexed by Denver in 1896. Today Highland has benefited from the redevelopment of the Central Platte Valley along with the several bridges connecting Highland with LoDo. In 2006, the Highland Bridge extended over I-25 giving a direct walking path from Highland to downtown Denver through River Front Park. Its boundaries are surrounded by I-25 and 38th Ave and extend west to Federal and Speer BLVD. Although many older buildings and parking lots are being replaced with high rises and high-end condominiums and lofts, Highland still offers many historic single family homes. Because of the recent developments and its increased popularity, property value in Highland has increased tremendously in the last decade. Highland offers a diverse community and the feel of a small town in close proximity to the “big city.” There are many award-winning restaurants and shopping all within walking distance. Some of the favorite restaurants include 8 Rivers - modern day Caribbean cafe, the Highlands Garden Cafe, and Sushihai. The Highlands are in the Denver Public School system which is recognized as one of the best urban school systems in the country. The Highlands are a great place to live and we feel the future looks very promising. If you are looking to find a place to live for awhile, the Highlands is a great place to both raise a family and find entertaining nightlife.
