The neighborhood started out as 32 acres of platted land owned by Baron Allios Gillaume Engine von Winckler which is now present day South Park Hill. Von Winckler allowed 1400 troops from the National Guard to camp on this property in 1898 in response to the Spanish-American War. Shortly after, the first residential homes were put on the market and became a popular settling place for many foreign settlers from countries such as England, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Many African Americans also moved into the neighborhood as well creating one of Denver’s most diverse communities. The neighborhood is home to over 26,000 residents and offers 10,500 homes in the three sub neighborhoods of Park Hill. Each sub-neighborhood differs greatly in respect to average family income. South Park Hill’s median income was well over $88,000 while North Park Hill’s median income is around $58,000. Park Hill is full of many beautiful brick homes which at one time offered lower housing costs which were appealing to many to move back to the city. There have been some gang related issues several years back in North Park Hill but the city has done a lot to clean up most of the problems. Park Hill has been home to several professional athletes such as Chauncey Billups, Mike Bell and LenDale White. The Mayor of Denver, John Hickenlooper also currently resides in Park Hill.
